Field Notes
On October 28, 2014, we went to a beach right near Kettle Cove. We got there around 10:00 in the morning. It was warm and pretty damp, and it started to shower a bit when we went to leave. There were a ton of big rocks covered in seaweed. I could smell the salt as soon as I stepped on the beach. There were also a lot of kids running around and shouting at each other. Some problems that we had were that we couldn't find our species at first, but then one of my teachers motivated us and helped us find it. I'm surprised that we finally found our species because there was barely any of the species on the beach, and when we did find it, it was a small clump of it. It was very hard to find.

We know that we found Dead Man's Fingers because it has a sponge-like texture. The plant can come in large clumps, even though we only found a small bit of it. On the Vital Signs ID card, these are all ways to make sure that it is Dead Man's Fingers.

We know that the plant we found is Dead Man's Fingers because each part of the plant branches off into parts that looks like Y's, and those parts branch off into more Y's, which means that it’s growth pattern is dichotomus. We only found a little bit of the plant, but we can still tell that it's Dead Man's Fingers because of the distinct growth pattern. According to the Vital Signs ID card, these are all ways to identify our species as Dead Man's Fingers.

We did find Dead Man's Fingers because the color of the species we found was a cooked spinach green color, like it says on the Vital Signs ID card. The plant is pencil thick. That is how we know it is Dead Man's Fingers.
