MLR & Next Gen Science Standards

The Vital Signs experience and all curriculum authored by the VS Team aligns with Maine Learning Results standards for grades 6-8.

Our professional development for teachers is aligned with the best practices of science instruction presented in the National Research Council’s Ready, Set, Science!

We are part of Maine's Science Leadership Team reviewing the draft Next Generation Science Standards that are being developed from the National Academies of Sciences’ publication A Framework for K-12 Science Education. We are excited by the alignment of the teaching practices we are cultivating in Vital Signs and the changes called for by the Framework, particularly the new integration of science and engineering practices in addition to content.

Maine Learning Results

Here is very general listing of the program-level standards. Lesson plans and units include detailed lists of standards across subjects.

Science & Technology (Grades 6-8)

    B1. Skills and Traits of Scientific Inquiry

    Students plan, conduct, analyze data from, and communicate results of investigations, including simple experiments (B1a, B1b, B1c, B1d, B1e, B1f)

    C1. Understandings of Inquiry

    Students describe how scientists use varied and systematic approaches to investigations that may lead to further investigations (C1a, C1b)

    E1. Biodiversity

    Students differentiate among organisms based on biological characteristics and identify patterns of similarity (E1a, E1b, E1c)

    E2. Ecosystems

    Students examine how the characteristics of the physical, non-living environment, the types and behaviors of living organisms, and the flow of matter and energy affect organisms and the ecosystem of which they are part (E2a, E2b)

Social Studies (Grades 6-8)

    A2. Making Decisions Using Social Studies Knowledge & Skills

    Students make individual and collaborative decisions on matters related to social studies using relevant information and research and discussion skills (A2a, A2b)

    A3. Taking Action Using Social Studies Knowledge & Skills

    Students select, plan, and implement a civic action or service-learning project based on a school community, or State asset or need, and analyze the project’s effectiveness and civic contribution
