Create an Alien Invader

After classroom discussion and activities around scientific names, invasive species, habitats, and adaptions, this project should include a colorful drawing of an imaginary creature, invading a new habitat, its Latin name, its common name, and a list of at least three structural and behavioral adaptations which will allow it to survive in a new environment. Be sure to look for Latin roots that describe the imaginary animal, when creating a scientific name. Materials for the final copy can be provided: a half-sheet of drawing paper or large index card, construction paper, colored pencils, and other necessary items. A rough copy is required with a peer and/or adult edit before completion.

Students who demonstrate understanding can:

Construct an explanation based on evidence that describes how genetic variations of traits in a population increase some individuals’ probability of surviving and reproducing in a specific environment.

I agree ns2me. I think this lesson helps build toward students understanding that some traits increase survival and genetic fitness. I think it's cool to think about connecting to genetics topics too if students have learned those of how you might have these posted around the room and if you get to genetics later in the year they could bring their alien invaders in as their model organism. That would be cool! :)
