Fourth/ Fifth grade freshwater species survey sheet

This is a simplified data sheet for the field. My students were having difficulty accessing the information on the species survey- even reading it and grasping what was expected of them. Once they've used it and understand it makes more sense to them, but for our first couple trips into the field I gave them this instead. It includes everything on the freshwater habitat species survey needed for uploading to the Vital Signs database.

Independent Ecology Investigation

This full unit of study structures a student-driven learning experience that has students defining a research question, planning a Vital Signs data investigation, analyzing and interpreting their data, and communicating their findings. Students are guided through group activities designed to develop background knowledge in relationships in ecosystems and skills around data collection and analysis. Students extend this work by applying the newly developed skills and concepts to a student-driven investigation which culminates in creating a product to share their results.

Intro Activity for Water Quality Bioassessment Mission

Use this short, energizing lesson to prepare students for gathering and analyzing water quality data. Students will be introduced to Benthic Macro-Invertebrates (BMIs) and how they are used to monitor water quality. In two stations, students will develop skills in identifying BMIs and gathering data from the Vital Signs database on where BMIs have been found and not found. Students will use the data that they gathered to determine the water quality of a specific pond that has been monitored by other Vital Signs students.
