Citizen Science: taking the scientific community by storm

It seems that citizen science projects are everywhere these days. From finding exoplanets, to cataloging plankton from offshore robots, to examining climate change effects through backyard flowers, citizen science is taking off at breakneck speed… and for good reason!

In Memoriam: Greg Carter, devoted educator

Maine and the Vital Signs community lost an extraordinary and devoted educator last week. Greg Carter was a wonderful teacher and colleague, not just to those that he taught with, but for us here at GMRI, too.

Mr. I Explains Vital Signs

Last spring Henry Ingwersen and his students at Wells Elementary School did Vital Signs. Then Henry and his tech integrator worked together to make this video and shared it on Vimeo. It's a great intro to Vital Signs, a great description of what it might look like in a classroom, and a great description of the impacts on students!

Winter is a fun Vital Signs season, too!

Winter is definitely here, but Vital Signs activities continue. There are many ways to participate in Vital Signs this winter. It's a great time to dig deeper and learn more about invasive species across the state and at our borders and to share that learning with others. Check out some ways to participate this winter.

Fall 2013 - Season Recap

Fall field seasons are the busiest time of year for Vital Signs. It's no surprise given the unpredictable winter and spring weather here in Maine. This fall was no exception, and it was busier in some ways than any past. Here's more info on Vital Signs this fall and falls past.

BOLO for Chinese Mitten Crabs

Green crabs have been getting a lot of press lately, but there's another crab invader on the East Coast to Be On the Look Out (BOLO) for. The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center wants your observations of Chinese mitten crabs.

Want to help monitor for the Chinese mitten crab? Here's what you can do:

So much activity this summer!!

There was so much activity this summer! Check it out. Leave some comments. Let us know if you see something that should be on the best of pages. There were 220 Species Observations posted and 331 comments made. That's more activity than any other summer so far!

MSSM Educators Camp 2013 - Another awesome week!

It was my pleasure to spend another week in Limestone at MSSM's 2013 STEM Educators Collaborative. I had an amazing time co-teaching a VS course with Pat Parent and spending time with fun, inspiring, and engaged STEM educators. I can't wait until next year. For now, here's a little bit about what we did.

Vital Signs Summer Internship

Hi Vital Signs Community!

I'm Jeffrey, the 2013 VS Summer intern. In a quick blog post, I wanted to introduce myself and give all of you a quick overview of what I've done this summer for the VS community.

Intern Event 2013

On Tuesday, July 16th, the VS team including Jeffrey, the VS intern, headed out with five other GMRI interns in search of native and invasive species in Robinson Woods II in Cape Elizabeth. It was great to introduce the interns to VS (of course Jeffrey is an old pro).
